EU-INSPECTION IN FEBRUARY

Producers should note that the next European Union (EU) inspection / audit will take place from 19 February 2013 to 1 March 2013. The visit will include the evaluation of controls in terms of animal and public safety with respect to the production of fresh and game meat destined for the EU markets and certification procedures.

The inspection will also scrutinize the implementation of guarantees by the competent authority (Directorate of Veterinary Services) as requested by the previous EU visit.

Producers are therefore requested to co-operate with and be prepared for the visit by the EU inspection team. This includes the following:
  1. Animals, from the age of six months, should have double ear tags and appear on the central database.
  2. The blue FANMeat file with the registers should be up to date. This includes the livestock register, Form A: (register dealing with the treatment of animals with medicine and other substances), Form B: (register dealing with feeds and licks) and Form C: (register dealing with the training of labourers).
  3. The animal health questionnaire, which should be completed twice yearly, should also be handed in.
(Editor: These registers/forms can be down loaded at:http://agrialert.blogspot.com/2012/07/traceability-important-fanmeat-farm.html)

There are more requirements farmers should meet, like animal welfare standards, the storing of chemicals, licks, etc. Producers are requested to go through the FANMeat manual and to ensure that they meet all the necessary requirements.

Producers that receive this notice should please inform their fellow producers who do not have access to this information about it.

The Livestock Producers’ Organisation (LPO) will keep their members informed about the preparations for the EU inspection.

Also take note of the following inspections which occur in 2013:
  • FSIS (VSA) – end January 2013;
  • China - March 2013;
  • OIE (World Organisation of Animal Health) –first quarter 2013.

NORWEGIAN RETAIL GIANT HOSTS SALES MEETING IN NAMIBIA

NorgesGruppen, one of Meatco’s biggest clients and one of Norway’s largest retail businesses, hosted their annual internal sales meeting in Namibia.

According to Frederico Ferannini Fick, head buyer for NorgesGruppen, the decision was taken so the sales team could experience Namibia first hand which would allow them to better sell the Namibian story and Meatco’s Natures Reserve product in Norway.

Frederico, who was also the guest speaker at Meatco’s Producer of the Year event last year, said that hosting the meeting in Namibia is a substantial investment, but that they believe in the Natures Reserve brand so much that they feel it’s worth it.

The group of 19 landed in Windhoek last week Friday. During the weekend they attended a demonstration of Meatco beef, sheep and game and visited the farm Ongeama. Meatco’s Chief Executive Officer, Kobus du Plessis made a small presentation to the group on Sunday and on Monday they went for a tour of Meatco’s facilities. Tuesday they left for Norway again.

According to Frederico there is a group of Norwegians that became a little bit Namibian after the visit.
FEEDBACK TO GOVERNMENT ON MEATCO LAWS CLOSES JANUARY

Producers are reminded that their inputs with regards to the proposed Meatco Act and Bylaws should be submitted the the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF) before the end of January 2013. During the Government’s road show in December to inform stakeholders about the proposed Meatco laws and to solicit inputs, the Permanent Secretary of MAWF, Mr. Joseph Iita, postponed the date for comments and inputs to 31 January 2013.
OKAHANDJA FACTORY CLOSING FOR MAINTENANCE

Meatco’s Okahandja plant will close for slaughter on 31 January 2013 for annual maintenance. The factory will re-open for slaughtering on 10 April 2013. In the meantime the Windhoek factory will remain open for slaughter.
OFF-SEASON PREMIUM ENDS 22 FEBRUARY 2013

Producers should note that the off-season premium is only applicable until Friday, 22 February 2013. That means the premium is not payable to animals which are slaughtered on 25, 26, 27 or 28 February 2013.

PRICES ONLY AVAILABLE ON MONDAY

Because of a delay in the announcement of RMAA prices, which form the basis of Meatco prices, Meatco will unfortunately only be able to announce its prices on Monday. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
