Large Stock Management Activities: November and December

The rainy season is on its way
NOVEMBER
1st Week:


  • Vaccinate all cattle against Chlamydiae accept for calves still suckling (not weaned)
  • Supplementary feeding. If green grass and vegetation appear due to early rains start supplementing Phosphate in the form of P6 (already mixed with salt) or P12 mix with salt (50:50). If no green vegetation is present continue with dry veld supplementation. Be careful of NPN  and urea poisoning. Cover feeding troughs with any sign of rain. 
  • Additional feeding. Feed breeding animals (heifers, cows and bulls) with additional feed (Enerfeed, Albida pods, Hominey chop etc) in order to achieve and maintain a body condition score of 3-4. This will help fertility and ease lactation an-estrus and maintain/improve the libido of bulls...



2nd Week:
  • Vaccinate calves still suckling (not weaned) against Brucelloses. Brucella S19 for calves less than 9 months old 


3rd Week:
  • Submit birth notices (newborn calves)
4th Week:
  • Weigh all cattle for biomass and post-calving mass of cows
  • Dehorn calves
  • Select replacement heifers and cull cows (not performing) for the upcoming mating season 
DECEMBER
1st Week:

  • Weigh heifers for 12 month mass
  • Weigh heifers ready for mating with the beginning of the heifer mating season (starting 15 December and lasting 75 days)
  • Divide heifers into breeding groups with the selected bulls for the mating season (15 December and lasting 75 days)
  •  Submit birth notices for newly born calves
  • Send all 12 month data to Stud Breeders Society
3rd Week:
  • Celebrate Christmas with the family...!!!! 
4th Week:
  • Weigh all cattle for biomass and post calving mass of cows
  • Dose young horses against internal parasites
