NAU presents de-bushing proposals to the Ministry of
Agriculture
The NAU last week presented a document to the Director
of Forestry, Mr Joseph Hailwa in which certain proposals were made with regard
to de-bushing. The proposals include inter alia subsidised loans at AgriBank or
commercial banks, a 1:1 subsidy from the state for de-bushing as well as
research with regard to products which can be exported, especially as
alternative energy sources to European Power Stations.
De-bushing is a high priority in both the National
Development Plan (NDP4) as well as the Annual Sector Execution Plan (ASEP) for
Forestry of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry. Even though no
specific policy has been drafted yet for the execution of this Sector Plan, the
proposals of the NAU are in line with the project proposals which were drafted
by the Ministry.
In reaction of the submission, the Minister of
Agriculture, Water & Forestry recommended that officials of the Ministry
discuss the proposals with the NAU and make a recommendation as soon as
possible which he can submit to Cabinet.
Visit to Minister of Labour and Social Welfare
Members of the AEA
management paid a courtesy call to the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare,
Ms Doreen Sioka at her office in Khomasdal on Thursday, June 7, 2013. The
Minister’s delegation included the Deputy Minister and Special Advisor of the
Ministry. The AEA was represented by Messrs H Förtsch, R Laubscher and D van
Vuuren. One of the important issues which again came up was the re-activation
of the NALF (Namibian Agricultural Labour Forum) which should hold at least 3
meetings annually, but which came to an end in 2011 by the Ministry who are
doing the facilitation and secretarial functions. NALF comprises members of the
AEA, the NNFU and NaFU (Namibia Farm Workers Union) with the Ministry as facilitator.
The aim of the Forum is to promote dialogue and debate between relevant parties
in the agricultural sector about labour related matters and to make
recommendations to the Minister of Labour and the Labour Advisory Board.
The planned apprenticeship for young farm workers, the adaption of the
minimum wage and the NCPA (Namibia Charcoal Producers Association) agreement
were some of the issues which were discussed and will further be handled by
NALF. The meeting took place in a good spirit and the new Minister made a good
impression on the AEA delegation.
