This book gives an overview of livestock management, nutrition, as well as the most common diseases, plants poisonings and parasites of ruminant livestock.  Vaccination and dosing programmes are given for all species as well as comprehensive details about the chemicals, methods of application and resistance problems with the remedies used for external parasites.

The aim of this book is to empower stock owners by providing detailed information on animal diseases and livestock farming.  It is in no way intended to be a replacement for veterinary assistance with respect to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases since no book can replace that service.  In the same vein, the book cannot make exact recommendations on parasite control or vaccination because each farm has its own conditions.  The programmes given are general guidelines and should be used in conjunction with advice from a  local veterinarian.  For convenience the chapters on diseases have been divided into symptom complexes and within the disease chapters, conditions are given in alphabetical order.  If you still cannot find the specific condition you are looking for, use the index at the back of the book.

No brand names of remedies have been mentioned in the text because products and companies come and go.  However the names of chemical groups (e.g. pyrethroid) or a specific active ingredient (e.g. deltamethrin) have been used, and this will allow farmers to obtain the correct product through their co-operatives or other suppliers.  An insert containing lists of Afrivet products has been included.

Pamela Oberem is a veterinarian who spent 20 years as a researcher at Onderstepoort on infectious diseases.  She was manager for the Foot and Mouth Vaccine Production Unit and an expert consultant to Onderstepoort Biological Products on the production of bacterial and viral vaccines.  She is the author of various scientific papers and technical publications, and has published a number of books for the public on animal health.  Pamela is also the author of a noval about life in a small Waterberg town.
