Dairy producers held meeting
The meeting took with great concern officially note that Mr Christo Strydom will discontinue his milk farming at the end of April 2012. The pressure of cheap imported milk products into the Namibian market (the latest is N$9,99 at Pick&Pay) cause that milk producers could  not get any increase in the milk price for the past 3 years. An independent study which the Dairy Producers Association (DPA) started in November 2011, confirmed that milk producers can only break even with great difficulty and some producers even show a loss on their financial statements. The DPA has been in contact with various Ministries for some time already to investigate the possibility to protect the domestic milk industry against the unfair trade in the market.
Price negotiations started with Namibia Dairies and the DPA hopes DPA members get a reply by middle May. Regional representatives will directly contact the members.
The member meeting of the DPA and Dairy Provider for the Year will be held on Monday, July 23, 2012 and the DPA requests all members to attend this day. The speakers (about extensive as well as intensive feeding methods) will be announced nearer to the time but promise to meet the expectations.

Prosopis day at Leonardville
A successful day which specifically was about the control and use of Prosopis, was held on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Farm Donnersberg of Mr Willie Prinsloo in the Gobabis district. The keynote speaker was Dr Pierre Smit who obtained his doctors degree on research which he has done about all aspects of Prosopis.
Prosopis becomes an uncontrollable problem in especially river beds at the south-east and east of the country. In some places it has increased so much that the flow of the river water is completely stopped and it also has a tremendous influence on the underground water sources.
Besides the control of Prosopis which was mechanically demonstrated, Mr Pieter Maartens also talked about the chemical control of especially smaller trees. Prosopis however also has an economic value and Mr Willie Krugel of Furncraft talked about the use of Prosopis wood to manufacture furniture and Mr Flip du Plessis of Feedmaster talked about the use of Prosopis pods in lick mixtures.
The day definitely contributed towards the awareness of the Prosopis problems and also about the economic value thereof.
