Omkhaibasen Farmers Co-operative (OKFC) held a successful Small
Livestock Marketing Farmers Information Day
The Omkhaibasen Farmers Co-operative operating in the
Spitzkoppe, Tubusis and ≠Goabeb areas near Usakos, held a Small Livestock direct
marketing to Abattoir Farmers Information day with its members and surrounding
communities in collaboration with Namibia Allied Meat Company (Namco) on 28 April
2012, Saturday under the theme “to measure is to create a pathway to treasure” at
OKFC HQ, Daweb Wes no.62, North East of Usakos.
The event was attended by the members of the Co-operative and
surrounding farmers, Resettled farmers as well Agriculture Extension
Technicians from Kunene and Erongo Regions.
Mr Jan Schutte from Namco conducted various presentations across
all spectrums of small livestock marketing inter alia: quality breeding,
feeding management, proper livestock management, judging and selection of Small
Livestock for marketing as well as all other ethical norms. He further clarified
different market channels: Abattoirs, Auctions, Speculators and Permit days
with advantages and disadvantages. He encourages Farmers to organized
themselves and market livestock directly to Abattoirs for value addition to
meat and meat products.
The Agriculture Extension Technicians, urged the participants to
make use of the opportunities presented by Omkhaibasen Farmers Co-operative to
attain maximum benefits to contribute toward organized agriculture as a backbone
of rural development.
The day was concluded with braai, courtesy of Namco. More than forty
(40) farmers were in attendance.
The Omkhaibasen Farmers Co-operative used the opportunity and
informed fellow Co-operatives, members and farmers about the International Year
of the Co-operatives celebrated this year worldwide as declared by UN under the
theme “Co-operative Enterprises Build a Better World”.
