Importing and Exporting Meat for own Consumption

Due to the high influx of inquiries regarding own consumption requirement, persons importing or exporting meat and meat products for own consumption, should take note of the following:
1. 25kg raw meat (mutton/beef/goat etc.)
2. 10 kg biltong
3. 25kg processed meats - smoked beef/oryx/polony
4. Only 4 persons in the car over the age of 12 years old

Furthermore, persons taking meat outside Namibia for own consumption which is more than the permitted amount, must apply for a Meat Board permit provided they have an import permit from the destination country

Meat Board welcomes Performance Agreement

The Meat Board signed a governance and performance agreements in terms of the state-owned enterprises government Act with the Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, John Mutorwa, yesterday, 16 May 2013.
The purpose of the performance agreement is to communicate to the board members the expectation of the Ministry.

Market Trends

The beef market is expected to trend sideways with limited upward potential on softer seasonal demand. The relatively poor pasture conditions in some areas will force producers to reduce stock due to concerns over availability of grazing during the winter period.
Mutton market trends, prices will trend sideways with limited upward potential in medium term on weak demand.

Poultry Scheme

The Meat Board was authorised by the Minister of Trade and Industry to implement a Poultry Marketing Scheme as was Gazetted in Notice 81/2013. In terms of this notice only 600 tons of meat derived from poultry (Species Gallus Domesticus) will be allowed for importation per month.
The Meat Board had several industry meetings/information sessions with relevant stakeholders to inform them of all procedures.
The poultry scheme will be implemented on Monday 6 May and importers are requested to make sure that they have the necessary import permits as from 12h Sunday night.
