2nd Week:
- Start drought mitigation if rainfall is below average: Get rid of unproductive animals, buy fodder to assist productive animals through the drought. In case of a severe drought keep only a nucleus herd and sell off most animals. You can always restock (at higher price) when the drought is over
- Treat/dose calves against Milk worm
- Determine when calves (from adult cows) have to be weighed for pre-weaning (100 day) mass
- Tattoo calves still suckling
- Determine the closure of Phase D test
- Observation of IA cows end 10 March. Allocate AI cows not pregnant to reserve bulls
3rd Week:
- Dispatch 100 day information
4th Week:
- Weigh all cattle for biomass and mass at the end of the mating season (mature/adult cows)
- Cow mating season ends
APRIL: CATTLE MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
1st Week:
- Order combination vaccine against Anthrax, Botulism and Black Quarter
- Test working bulls for venereal (sexual transmittable) diseases
2nd Week:
- Consider protein supplementation (winter-lick) if rain stopped otherwise continue with Phosphate supplementation
3rd Week:
- Take blood samples of horses and donkeys for Doureen test ("Slapsiekte toets")
- Dispatch Phase D data
- Select Phase D bulls at end of Phase D test
4th Week:
- Weigh all animals for biomass
- Vaccinate all cattle against Anthrax, Botulism and Black Quarter (combination vaccine)
- Order Brucella vaccine for heifers. Brucella S19 for heifers younger than 9 months and Brucella RB51 if older than 9 months
