Drought Measures
Because of the total lack of rain over most parts of Namibia the Meat Board received various requests regarding the creation of possible marketing channels. Proposals regarding drought relief also served at the meetings of the Meat Board and the National Marketing Committee where all parties were represented. The Meat Board decided that a technical committee working under the auspices of the Meat Board and consisting of producers, agents and abattoirs will formulate detailed measures to give relief in a possible drought. Various industry meetings have already been held in this regard.
Producers can contact Mr Goliath Tujendapi, Manager: Trade (telephone 275836) for more information.

South Africa's Foot-and-Mouth Disease-Free-Status
South Africa's request to the OIE to regain the country's foot-and-mouth disease-free status from the International Animal Health Organisation was unsuccessful. This means that South Africa will again have to submit a request by September 2013 for approval by middle 2014. This decision by the OIE means that livestock bought in South Africa by Namibians may still not be exported to Namibia.
