Meat Board participates in Small Stock Meeting

The Meat Board participated in a Small Stock Meeting at Keetmanshoop on 20 February. Aspects under discussion included, among others, the sheep scheme, the involvement of the producer in the value chain, alternative markets for small stock, European Union brucellosis requirements, bone-in lamb meat exports to the European Union and grading.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry is currently busy with an extensive investigation into existing export limitations on livestock, hides and skins, given value addition and job creation, and should publish a preliminary report within the following few weeks. The Meat Board together with agricultural unions and the Ministries of Trade and Industry and Finance forms part of the committee that manages the process.

Forty (40) days Residence a Requirement

The European Union Regulations require that all livestock earmarked for slaughter and meat exports to the European Union remain on a registered farm for forty days before slaughter. This is a requirement for all producers whose meat is exported to the European Union.
This requirement, as interpreted by the Directorate of Veterinary Services, had a huge financial impact on producers and abattoirs in the past few weeks, and was not sustainable in the long term. With inputs from the Meat Board, export abattoirs and agricultural unions, the Directorate of Veterinary Services is currently in the process of amending the interpretations by way of a written document. The isolating of earmarked livestock for slaughter and export to the European Union will therefore no longer be required – only proof that the animals were on the farm for forty days before slaughter will be required. Producers are therefore requested to ensure that all livestock identification and movement notices on NAMLits are up to date.
