Two gang related attacks on farmers in Omaruru area left a trail of blood and fear as farm violence seem to increase in Erongo region. Two people were injured while a third man was seriously injured when struck with the but of a gun to the face.
Farm Kanona of Mr. J. Storbeck, 30 km from Omaruru on the Karibib road was robbed during Wednesday evening (items worth about N$ 500 went missing) while he and his wife was in Windhoek. Fortunately they left a security guard in the house. The robbers left when they realized somebody was in the house. They tried again Thursday night firing at the house, but was met with resistance from the security guards, which by now was increased with two extra personnel. The robbers fled when the guards returned fire. One of the guards was shot in the leg.
According to Police Inscpector Erastus Ikuyu, four suspects were apprehended and are currently in custody
Farm Kasandara, 20 km from Omaruru on the Kalkfeld road was attacked by 7 highly organised robbers on Saturday (3 November 2012) evening (23:00pm). Family members were severely injured during the "attack" with several hunting rifles, a revolver, laptop, other items and N$ 1000 cash stolen. The farm pick-up truck was used as an escape vehicle. It was later recovered 7km from the crime scene on the Kalkfeld road with the 3 hunting rifles on the back. The revolver with the other stolen goods are still missing. No arrest has been made and the culprits are still at large.
Mr. Martin Van Wyk, Chairperson of the Omaruru Farmers Association is concerned about the increase in farm attacks and robberies and request better cooperation from the police with the coordinated efforts of the Omaruru Farmers Association.
