Meat Board News



FanMeat

Representing the FANMeat committee the meat industry met under the auspices of the Meat Boardlast week. Matters that were addressed were, among others, the quality of ear tags, animal welfare, the international certification of FANMeat and data processing. The Meat Board was requested that the NamLITS office assist by making data processors available in order to follow up the backlog of enquiries regarding animal movement notices.

National Animal Health Forum

The Meat Board was approached by the Ministry of Trade and Industry to accompany them to Norway. The goal of this visit is, among others, to invite the Norwegian Minister of Development to visit Namibia and to point out the advantages of development projects, as well as to investigate the possibility of an increased Namibian quota to Norway

Woolworths Audits

On request of Woolworth's the Meat Board audited various cattle and sheep farms of producers who are suppliersof Woolworth's. The results of the audit showed progress measured against previous audits, but the administration of compulsory records, the handling of problem animals and the training of workers must receive attention. The necessary promotion and programmes in this regard will be set into motion.

Agricultural Outlook Conference

The Vice-chairman and Manager: Information of the Meat Board attended the latest Agricultural Outlook Conference of Agrimarket Tendencies in Pretoria on 3 and 4 September 2012. According to Mr Johan van den Berg of SANTAM who was responsible for the weather outlook, there is a considerable possibility that El Niño will appear, which indicates more droughts during the following rainy season. According to Mr Ernst Janowski from FNB cattle prices are expected to be aroundN$30/kg and sheep prices around N$48/kg by December 2012
